Music and Cognitive Development
More than music lessons - tuition built around the research on how music shapes the developing brain.
CogniMusica exists because music isn't just an art form - it's one of the most cognitively demanding things a child can do. Learning an instrument simultaneously engages working memory, motor coordination, language processing, attention, and emotional regulation. Done well, music tuition is one of the richest developmental experiences a child can have. Our entire approach is built around making the most of that.
What the Research Shows
Decades of research show consistent links between musical training and a range of cognitive abilities - particularly in children. Music supports the development of phonological awareness (a key building block of reading), sustained attention, working memory, and fine motor skills. The mechanisms aren't magic: it's that music genuinely engages many brain systems at once, and sustained practice builds the connections between them. Our founder Justyna Skop-Wach is a PhD researcher in Psychology at the University of Dundee, studying exactly how musical rhythm supports language and reading development in children - research that directly shapes how we teach.
Our Approach
What this means in practice is that every CogniMusica lesson is designed around two parallel goals: musical progress and cognitive development. Our tutors are trained to recognise when a child is building working memory, when they're stretching their attention, when they're integrating motor and auditory feedback - and to structure exercises that support those moments. We don't promise miracles. We do promise that your child's musical training will be informed by what the science actually shows.
- Working memory: holding multiple musical elements in mind at once
- Sustained attention: extending focus through structured, engaging practice
- Sensory integration: coordinating sight, sound, and touch in real time
- Language processing: rhythm and pitch directly support phonological skills
- Motor coordination: fine motor control developed alongside whole-body awareness
- Emotional regulation: music as a structured outlet for self-expression
How It Works in Practice
Our cognitive-science-informed approach isn't a separate programme - it's how we teach every lesson. Whether your child is learning violin, piano, viola, guitar, electric guitar, or singing, the same principles apply. Many of our tutors come from disciplines outside music: psychology, speech and language therapy, pharmacology. This multidisciplinary background helps us see children's learning more fully than music tuition alone usually does.
