Music Lessons for Children with Additional Needs
Adapted, research-informed lessons for children with DLD, DCD, and other developmental conditions.
Specialist support for children with additional learning needs is central to CogniMusica's mission. Beyond autism, ADHD, and dyslexia (each of which has its own dedicated page), we work with children who have developmental language disorder (DLD), developmental coordination disorder (DCD), and a range of other developmental conditions. Music can support each of these in different, evidence-informed ways.
What the Research Shows
Our approach is grounded in research. For children with DLD, musical rhythm processing connects directly to the language systems affected - rhythm-focused musical training may support phonological and language development. For children with DCD, instrumental learning develops fine motor coordination over time and can complement other occupational therapy. Across the broader spectrum of additional needs, music offers a structured, multi-sensory environment in which children can develop at their own pace.
Our Approach
Every child is different, so every lesson is individualised. We work closely with parents to understand your child's specific needs, what they enjoy, what they find difficult, and what approaches have worked elsewhere. We build their lessons around all of that.
- Highly individualised sessions adapted to each child's needs
- Tutors from disciplines including psychology, speech and language therapy, and pharmacology - bringing a genuinely multidisciplinary perspective
- Strong emphasis on rhythm, listening, and multi-sensory learning
- Realistic, honest pacing - celebrating progress at your child's tempo
- Active collaboration with parents and, where appropriate, other professionals supporting your child
- Inclusive of bilingual and EAL families (we teach in both English and Polish)
How Sessions Work
Lessons take place in our Dundee or Bo'ness studios, in your home with prior arrangement, or online. Many families with children who have additional needs prefer online or home lessons - the familiar environment reduces sensory load. Sessions are 40 minutes or 60 minutes, weekly or twice-weekly. We'd recommend an initial conversation before booking so we can match your child with the right tutor and approach.
