Piano Lessons

One of the richest instruments for musical and cognitive development - for children aged four and above.

Piano is one of the most rewarding instruments a child can learn - and one of the best-studied for cognitive development. At CogniMusica, we offer one-to-one piano lessons across Scotland (in our Dundee and Bo'ness studios, at home, or online) that combine professional musical training with cognitive-science-informed teaching. Students start as young as four and progress at their own pace, often through the ABRSM grades.

What Your Child Will Learn

Piano teaches children to read music on two staves at once, coordinate both hands independently, and engage with a full range of musical styles - from Bach to film soundtracks to contemporary pop. Our lessons build a solid technical foundation while keeping the music genuinely enjoyable.

  • Hand independence and bilateral coordination from the very first lessons
  • Reading treble and bass clef notation (the foundation for many other instruments)
  • Musical theory, rhythm, and ear training woven into every session
  • Repertoire spanning classical, jazz, pop, and contemporary styles
  • Performance confidence through regular informal playing and exam preparation

The Cognitive Benefits

Of all instruments, the piano has the most extensive research backing its cognitive benefits. Playing piano simultaneously engages working memory, motor coordination, visual processing, and auditory attention - strengthening the connections between these systems. Our approach explicitly leverages this: each lesson is structured to develop musical skill while also supporting executive function, reading skills, and sustained attention. This isn't a bonus side-effect - it's why we exist.

How Sessions Work

Piano lessons take place in our Dundee studio (Kandahar House, 71 Meadowside), our Bo'ness studio, in your home with prior arrangement, or fully online over video. Sessions are 40 minutes (£35 in-studio or online, £40 at home) for children aged four and above, or 60 minutes (£40 in-studio or online, £45 at home) for ages eight and above. We prepare students for ABRSM practical and theory exams from Initial through Grade 8, with a strong track record of high pass rates.
