Music Lessons for Children with ADHD

Active, engaging lessons that work with your child's energy rather than against it.

Children with ADHD often thrive in music lessons - when the lessons are designed for them. Static, lecture-style teaching rarely works; active, multi-sensory, well-paced sessions usually do. CogniMusica has been working with children with ADHD for years, and our approach reflects what we've learned about what genuinely helps.

What the Research Shows

Research suggests that musical training can support several of the cognitive areas affected by ADHD: sustained attention, working memory, and the ability to inhibit distractions. Rhythm in particular engages timing and motor systems in the brain, and structured musical activity can support self-regulation. None of this is a substitute for proper ADHD support - but as part of a child's broader development, music can be remarkably constructive.

Our Approach

Our lessons for children with ADHD are structured but never rigid. We break the session into shorter, varied activities; use clear visual and verbal cues; build in movement when needed; and celebrate progress in ways that feel meaningful to the child. Many of our students with ADHD are working through ABRSM grades alongside their peers.

  • Shorter task sequences and frequent activity changes within a session
  • Clear visual cues and structured practice plans for use at home
  • Movement and physical engagement integrated into learning
  • Rhythm and pulse work to support timing and self-regulation
  • Positive, energetic tutoring that channels rather than suppresses energy
  • Honest, patient communication with parents about progress and challenges

How Sessions Work

Lessons take place in our Dundee or Bo'ness studios, in your home, or online. Many ADHD students do best with one-to-one lessons at the same time each week, so the routine becomes reliable. We'll discuss what works for your child up front and adapt as we go. Sessions are 40 minutes or 60 minutes, weekly or twice-weekly.
