The viola is the violin's deeper, mellower cousin - and a brilliant choice for children drawn to a warmer string sound, or for those looking for an instrument with less competition and better orchestral opportunities. CogniMusica offers viola lessons across Scotland - in our Dundee and Bo'ness studios, in students' homes, and online - for children aged four and above.
What Your Child Will Learn
Viola shares much with violin technique but reads music in the alto clef - a transferable skill few young musicians develop and one that opens doors in orchestral settings. Our lessons cover technique, posture, and a broad range of repertoire.
- Proper posture, bow technique, and left-hand position
- Reading alto clef - distinctive to viola and prized in orchestral settings
- Pitch matching, ear training, and intonation
- Repertoire from baroque to contemporary, including chamber and orchestral parts
- ABRSM exam preparation from Initial through Grade 8
The Cognitive Benefits
Like the violin, the viola develops fine motor control, pitch processing, and sustained attention. The alto clef adds a unique reading challenge that strengthens musical literacy. Many young violists report increased confidence - they learn an instrument that feels distinctive and valued, which can be powerful for children who might otherwise feel lost among many violinists.
How Sessions Work
Viola lessons take place in our Dundee studio, our Bo'ness studio, in your home with prior arrangement, or online. Child-sized violas are available (smaller violins can also be tuned and used as a starter viola when needed). Sessions are 40 minutes (£35 in-studio or online, £40 at home) for children aged four and above, or 60 minutes (£40 in-studio or online, £45 at home) for ages eight and above.

Our founder Justyna Skop-Wach holds a degree in Music and English from the University of Liverpool where she studied viola performance under Tony Shorrocks, former Head of Performance at the Music Department.
