Music Lessons for Autistic Children

Adapted, sensory-aware tuition that meets every child where they are.

CogniMusica welcomes autistic children at every stage of musical learning. Many of our students are on the autism spectrum, and we've built our approach around what we've learned works: structure, predictability, clear communication, and lessons that adapt to the child rather than the other way round. We don't claim that music tuition treats or cures autism - but for many autistic children, music is a uniquely powerful form of expression, focus, and connection.

What the Research Shows

There's a substantial body of research on autism and music. Autistic children often show particular strengths in musical perception - pitch processing, pattern recognition, and memory for melodies - and many find the structured, predictable nature of music genuinely supportive. Music also provides a non-verbal way to communicate emotion, which can be especially valuable for children who find verbal expression difficult.

Our Approach

Our approach with autistic students is highly individualised. Every child is different, and what works for one may not work for another. We work with families to understand what your child needs to thrive in a lesson - and then build their sessions around that.

  • Predictable lesson structure with clear transitions between activities
  • Sensory considerations: lighting, sound levels, breaks as needed
  • Visual supports and clear written or pictorial guides where helpful
  • Special interests woven into repertoire and practice
  • Pacing that respects the child's processing speed and energy
  • Our founder Justyna Skop-Wach is herself neurodivergent and openly so

How Sessions Work

Lessons take place in our Dundee or Bo'ness studios, in your home with prior arrangement, or online. Many autistic students prefer online or home lessons - the familiar environment reduces sensory load and supports focus. We'll have an initial conversation about what your child needs, and we'll keep adapting as we learn what works. Sessions are 40 minutes for younger children or 60 minutes for ages eight and above, weekly or twice-weekly.
